Don't Fall for this AC Replace Scam
At some time you will need to call for an AC tech to help maintain your system or repair it. However, some unscrupulous types like to take advantage of this predicament. Did you know that some HVAC companies offer their techs commission for each new system they sale? It can all add up to the AC replace scam.
1. What is the AC Replace Scam?
In short, the scam involves selling you a new system you don’t need. Most AC systems can last from ten to fifteen years depending on make, use, maintenance, etc. Here in Atlanta, we commonly use heat pumps. They last for an average of 16 years but can go as high as 20. Be especially aware of anyone who tell you to replace a system that is less than ten years old. To avoid the scam, you should never get an AC replacement estimate from just one provider. Ask around, do a web search, and select a few providers with good reputations to give you an estimate.
2. Avoid AC Replacement
The first thing you should whenever you suspect an issue with your HVAC system is to check your warranty. Your unit should come with a comprehensive guide but you may locate the info online on the manufacturer’s website. Many items are covered under your warranty, including replacement should the unit not perform to standards. Make sure to only use certified HVAC providers in your area for your maker. For example, we at Vital Air are certified HVAC techs for Lennox. Getting anyone outside the certification to install or repair your unit will void the warranty.
3. What to do if Someone Tries to Scam You
Did someone tell you that you needed a new system when you didn’t? You don’t have to just walk away. First, you should call the owner of the business and report the tech for unethical practices. Be sure to provide any evidence you may have. You may also be eligible for a full refund of any services performed by the company. Leave an online review detailing your experience. Feel free to report them to the BBB or similar agency if they do not resolve the situation to your satisfaction.
